Canada and Vancouver YFT co-hosted 2009 Spring Get Together Dinner

The Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver co-hosted a get-together Dinner for the officers and spouses before the arrival of the traditional Chinese Spring Festival.

This year the get-together dinner was held at the King's Chinese Cuisine Restaurant on Main Street, on Monday, January 12.

Both Canada YFT Chairman Kan Yu and Vancouver YFT Chairman Jim Yee came by our tables and gave toasts, wishing everyone a healthy and a prosperous New Year.

After dinner, we all went home happily. We were all looking forward for the upcoming events in the Year of the Ox, which includes the Spring Banquet and the 105th anniversary celebration of YFT Society of Canada on Valentines Day, February 14th.

    PRC in Vancouver Spring Banquet

On Friday, January 16, 2009, Mr. Liang Shugen, Consul General of the Peoples's Republic of China in Vancouver invited representatives from all three levels of Government in Canada, the Chinese Community leaders, Societies and Associations representatives and other dignitaries, to celebrate the 2009 Spring Festival at the Floata Restaurant in Chinatown.

Jim Yee, Chairman of the YFT Society of Vancouver, along with Vice-Chair, James Yu, YFT of Canada Secretaries Wing Yee and Martin Yee were invited to attended this annual Spring Banquet.

About 800 guests attended this gala event.

After his New Year Greetings, and speeches from his guests, Mr. Liang Shugen and his staff then toasted to the Chinese New Year of the Ox and wished everyone a Happy and healthy Chinese New Year.

The talented Consulate staff entertained us with their songs and dances.

Chinatown's Chinese New Year Celebration Banquet

All over the world, 2009 in the Chinese Lunar calendar is the Year of the Ox. In 2009, the Chinese New Year begins on January 26th and runs through February 15th. The Chinese New Year is the most important holiday of the year for Chinese all over the world. The Chinese also follow traditional customs for New Year - visiting friends and relatives, giving money in red envelopes to children, and cleaning their entire house to welcome in the New Year and get a new start.

Kan Yu, Chairman of the YFT Society of Canada, Jim Yee, Chairman of the YFT Society of Vancouver, along with the YFT Board members Wing Yee, David Yee, Gary Yee, Albert Yu, George Yee,  Shi Kun Yee and Martin Yee were invited to attended the 2009 Chinese New Year Celebration Banquet at the Floata Seafood Restaurant on Sunday, February 1st.

This annual event was organized by the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver, Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Vancouver, Vancouver Chinatown Merchants Association, S.U.C.C.E.S.S, Chinese Freemasons Vancouver Branch, Shon Yee Benevolent Association of Canada and the Chinese Community.

The evening gala program starts off with firecrackers. It was really great in watching the faces of the performers, and listening to the different rhythms coming from the the CBA Waistdrum Team, they were all drumming in unison. Followed by performance of the Chinese Freemason Athletic Club's Lion Dance team, the "Splendid Snowflakes" by the Strathcona Chinese Dance Company's dancing group.

The co-emcees were Mr. Jun Ing and Ms. Fanny Zhu. After their introduction of Special Guests, we listened to the opening address by Mr. Mike Jang, President of the Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver. He wished everyone a Happy Chinese New Year of the Ox.

Followed by three levels of Government representatives' greetings. Entertainment program was hosted by Mr. Robert Chan and Ms. Fanny Zhu.

Everyone enjoyed this festive evening and went home happily.

The 34th annual Chinese New Year parade, which began at noon, featured the largest assembly of traditional lion dance teams in Canada. There are over fifty colourful and energetic lions from the various local fraternal and martial arts organizations. Other highlights include multicultural dance groups representing the diverse segments of our Canadian cultural heritage, marching bands and various community groups.

An impressive crowd braved sleet, snow, and rain to welcome the Year of the Ox, at the 2009 Chinese New Year parade in Vancouver's Chinatown.

The YFT Society of Vanouver Youth Lion Dance Group had not been participating in this annual event since 2008. As most of the team members have grown up, after their graduation, they have either attend University to further their studies or starting their new careers in the work force, and most importantly, our dedicated sifu for Lion Dance group had moved back to Hong Kong since then.

Currently our Youth commitee is doing a lot of brainstorming, trying hard to learn how to revive this youth program and aiming to encourage more of the youth to particpate again.

Mah Benevolent Society Members of Vancouver Celebrating their 59th Anniversary

Our Mah cousins of the Mah Benevolent Society of Vancouver celebrated their 59th Anniversary on Sunday, February 15th.

As customary as in previous years, the Yees delegates of the Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and Vancouver attend the Mah's noon ceremony. This year nine Yee Fung Toy members, Kan Yu, Wing Yee, Gary Yee, Martin Yee, Steven Yee, David Yee, Dick Yee, George Yee and Jim Yee attended their noon ceremony at their club house on Hastings Street.

William asked Lawrence Der, the President of the Tse Clansman Association to say a few words to the gathering. Lawrence told us of his first hearing of the Huichun Yu accident, he was convinced that it was up to the Yee Fung Toy Society, with the help of the Tse and the Mah Societies, to raise some money to help this "Yu" family. Lawrence easily convinced Jim Yee and William Ma immediately, and the three associations were all able to give wholeheartedly to a worthy cause.

The Mahs held their evening Spring Banquet at the Floata Seafood Restaurant, the dining room was crowded. Honored guests include the PRC Consul-General Liang Shugen and his wife, Deputy Consul-General Li Wen Ci, Consul Mr. Chen Ri Biao, other dignitaries include MLA Mr. Richard Lee, Mayor of Vancouver Mr. Gregor Robertson, City councilors George Chow, Raymond Louie and Dr. Kerry Jang.

Three of the Vanouver YFT Youth Group members: Alan Yu, Kimberly Yu, and Andrew Wong attended the banquet (Chairman Jim had invited them to watch and learn how another Society like the Mahs do their banquet programs).

The banquet atmosphere was truly fantastic, with lion dancing to start the evening program, speeches by Chairman William Ma and Fred Mah, Consul General Liang Shugen, MLA Mr. Richard Lee, and Mayor Gregor Robertson.

Fred Mah announced that the 6th World Mah Convention will be held in Vancouver next year.

Throughout the evening Martial Arts demonstration were performed by the Mah's athletic Club members and the Kin Fung Athletic Club members. Followed by guests singing their favorite Karaoke songs.

Among one of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Mah's 2008 scholarship awards to their 12 outstanding students.

Ching Ming Memorial Service in Vancouver

The Chinese Pavillion at Mountainview Cemetery was not so crowded this year for the Ching Ming memorial service on Sunday, March 29.  As most of the Societies and Associations scheduled their memorial services earlier this year to avoid the crowding together at noon.

Around 20 members of the YFT Society of Vancouver arrived at noon at the Chinese Pavillion.

Our memorial service officially began as Mr. Steven Yee and his volunteers made preparations: candles and incense sticks were lit, fruits, roast pigs, chicken, sponge cakes, etc, and liquor were laid down on the ceremonial altar.

Advisor Dick Yee read the memorial ceremony oration this year while Vice-Chair James Yu read the English version.  Canada YFT Chairman Mr. Kan Yu, Vancouver YFT Vice-Chair Mr. James Yu, Canada YFT Vice Chairman Mr. Gary Yee, Secretary Mr. Wing Yee, Vancouver YFT Advisor Mr. Wayne Yee, Vancouver YFT directors Mr. Phillip Yu and David Yee took turns to pay homage to our ancestors, Mr. George Yee set off the firecrackers as the ceremony ended.

The AGM went well.  James Yu announced that our seniors are having their first annual birthday luncheon on April 11, and the annual picnic to be held at Trout Lake on July 12.

Special thanks to our Vice-Chair and Welfare Director, Mr. Steven Yee, who organized this year's Ching Ming celebration event, thanks to those who attended the celebration and thanks to Vice-Chair James Yu, who chaired this year's annual general meeting, which went through smoothly.

YFT Representives Attended the 2010 Shanghai Expo Countdown Banquet at the Floata Seafood Restaurant

The delegation of 10 members from the Shanghai Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Shanghai, led by Director Mr. Cui Minghua, visited Vancouver on Wednesday, April 29 to promote the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

The duration of the Fair is from May 1st to October 31, 2010. Currently the Fair has 234 countries and regions confirmed to participate, of which more than 200 countries and regions have signed a participation agreement, the construction progress is well under way.

The theme of the exposition will be "Better City ¡V Better Life" and signifies Shanghai's new status in the 21st century as a major economic and cultural center. It is expected to generate the largest number of visitors in the history of the world's fairs in terms of gross numbers.

The Chinese Benevolent Association in Vancouver and Canada¡¦s promotion committee for Expo 2010 hosted a Countdown to Expo 2010 dinner banquet at the Floata Seafood Restaurant on April 29.

YFT Secretary Wing Yee, representing the YFT Society of Canada, and Martin Yee, representing the YFT Society of Vancouver attended this festive event.

We learned that the Expo 2010 emblem, which is depicting the image of three people - you, me, him/her holding hands together, symbolizes the big family of mankind. Inspired by the shape of the Chinese character (meaning the world), the design conveys the organizers' wish to host an Expo which is of global scale and which showcases the diversified urban cultures of the world.

We also found out that the Expo 2010 mascot "Haibao," which means the treasure of the seas, is another Expo symbol created from Chinese character following the Expo emblem in the shape of "Shijie" (world).

"The Shanghai Expo is the pride of all Chinese people," says Cui, "and they have attached great importance to it since Shanghai's successful bid in 2002."  The office will also take the Expo as an opportunity to invite more overseas Chinese to come back to China to visit, Cui says. For more details please visit the  "Overseas Chinese to return home to see the World Expo" web site.

Over 300 people attended this event. The countdown banquet guests includes the Deputy Consul-General Li Wen Ci, MLA Mr. Richard Lee and City councilor George Chow.

Vancouver's Yees and Mahs - A Day Trip to Whistler

Around 8:30 am on a fine sunny Sunday morning on July 19th, 45 of us boarded the "Happy Times Travel" bus that would take us from the Yee Fung Toy Society House in Chinatown, to the Mah Society of Vancouver on Hastings Street, picked up 11 Mah Society members to fill the 56-seats bus. Our Mah cousins had already filled their other bus.

We then, were on our way to Whistler, the site of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, via the Sea to Sky Highway for a one day outing together.

This year, our Mah cousins co-hosted with us for a "one day" getaway to Whistler. Thanks to Chairman Jim Yee of the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver, and William Ma, Chairman of the Mah Society of Vancouver for arranging this joint program.

Our buses drove by Horseshoe Bay, Britannia Beach, Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, and Squamish. We had a rest stop at Squamish's Tim Hortons for some cool drinks and donuts. We arrived at Whistler Village just before noon and spent the next three hours exploring the place under the hot sun.

Some of us took a 15-minute shuttle ride from Whistler to beautiful "Lost Lake". It is a gorgeous, small mountain lake surrounded by lush greenery and flowers. With the colorful scenery, it's so unbelievable that seems like we walked right into a lovely postcard.

A few of us took the Whistler-Blackcomb Peak to Peak Gondola ride for a sight seeing adventure, and some stayed in the Whistler Village to do some shopping around.

After an enjoyable outing, our buses drove us back to Vancouver's Chinatown, where we dined at The Jade Dynasty Restaurant. Both appetizer and entree dishes came out quickly and all were very delicious.

The Yee-Mah friendship relationship in Vancouver is just keeps on getting stronger, deeper and better than ever!

Cheers to the Yees and Mahs! More adventures and outings together in the future!

YFT Societies of Canada and Vancouver raised $580 for the Taiwan victims of Typhoon Morakot

The Typhoon Morakot which hit Taiwan on August 8th, 2009 have triggered the worst flooding in 50 years in southern Taiwan and leading to landslides that buried remote mountainous villages and tribal settlements.

Hundreds of people were buried by the typhoon-spawned mudslide engulfed in Hsiaolin village. In central and southern Taiwan, thousands of people were trapped in their villages because of floods or landslides. In eastern Taiwan, houses were swept away by the rain-swollen river and thousands of people were evacuated.

The Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and the Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver started a fundraising campaign at the August monthly Board meeting, asking members to donate and help victims hit by the worst typhoon in Taiwan in half a century.

A total sum of $580 was raised for this worthy cause, including $200 donated by the YFT Society of Canada and $100 donated by the YFT Society of Vancouver. All proceeds will be sent to the Taiwan Red Cross to help these flood victims.
