A group of Grades 7-8 students from the Elegantia College of Hong Kong, consisting of 6 girls, 10 boys and 2 teachers started their day at 8 AM, touring the famous landmarks of Vancouver. They traveled on a chartered bus to the Vancouver Public Library, Gastown, Chinatown, Science World and finally came to the YFT at 3 PM. Three scholarship recipients and Andrew, a youth-group member, met with the students from Hong Kong. Ms. Irene Tam, the managing director of the Scholars Overseas Study Inc. was also present. She is the coordinator for this tour group.

Esther Yue was the MC of the event and the meeting started shortly after 3 PM. Larry, the first speaker, gave an inspiring speech. He talked about his family history. He named a few Chinese-Canadians, Dr. David Lam, Judge William Yee, Alice Wong, Jenny Kwan and George Chow and their influences in the mainstream society. Larry also showed the students with a recent article from the Vancouver Sun that predicts today¡¦s visible minorities will become majorities in 20 years.

Andrew shared with his experience in the YFT had influenced his outlook in life. He encouraged the students to follow their passions in choosing their careers instead of conforming to traditional way of becoming doctors and lawyers. Maurice, a scholarship recipient, shared with his experience in the Mini School. He enjoys the challenge in academics as well as the friendships that he has developed with his fellow students in the Mini School. Two Elegantia students, Karen and Harmony, each shared with their experience on this trip in Canada. They particularly enjoyed the home-stay with the Canadian families. They had the chance to do activities such as baking cup-cakes and going shopping with the home stay families. People were amazed at their abilities in speaking English.

Their teachers, Ms. Kanyu Wong and Ms. Carman To shared the students¡¦ experiences in Canada. They had a lot of first time experience, playing with snowball fights, participated in the Canadian education system, enjoying the beautiful scenery and the fresh air in Vancouver. All these experiences are positive.

At the end of the speeches, the YFT Association was presented a certificate, pamphlets and two boxes of chocolate by the Elegantia College. James was asked to receive these gifts on behalf of the YFT and photos were taken. Ms. Irene Tam also presented a plaque to the YFT Association.

Vancouver's Yees and Mahs 2010 Day Trip

After a successful day trip together to Whistler last year, the Yee and Mah Clans decided to take another scenic tour together once more, this time to Harrison Hot Springs, Inch Creek Hatchery and Westminster Abbey.

On a beautiful sunny Sunday on August 15th, the Yees and Mahs boarded two air-conditioned tour buses in Vancouver Chinatown, and headed to the scenic Harrison Hot Springs for our first stop.  Here are some photos of that memorable day.

Our next stop is at Inch Creek Hatchery, approximately 11 km. east of Mission, British Columbia, Canada. The pond on the west side of the hatchery is home to several large sturgeon. We saw two that day. The largest fish on hand weighs about 80 kg and is over 50 years old.

Our final stop is at Westminster Abbey. The monastery is located in a truly beautiful locale with miles and miles of rolling hills, and the Fraser River and the Coast mountains as a backdrop. The monks at Westminster Abbey have created a self-sufficient pastoral way of life, and follow the teachings of St. Benedictine.

In 1939 a group of Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Mount Angel, Oregon made their way to British Columbia to found a priory. Originally situated in Ladner (located in the Corporation of Delta), the monks moved the Seminary of Christ the King to the Deer Lake region of Burnaby before settling permanently on the outskirts of the City of Mission on 70 acres of land in 1954. Many of the buildings located on the Abbey grounds were built and designed by Norwegian architect AsbjÈûrn Gåthe. The Westminster Abbey has become a popular locale with visitors from around the world seeking to see the beautiful interior and exterior of the Abbey Church (completed in 1982) and to walk around.

Westminster Abbey is known as the Seminary of Christ the King, the abbey is run by monks. It is possible to visit Westminster Abbey but visitors must be dressed appropriately. The building is mostly of interest for the unique architecture which can be appreciated from the exterior is visitors don't wish to go inside, and also the view of the surrounding area. From the interior of the church the huge stained glass windows are a sight worth seeing.

Please click the "Yee - Mah" group photo above for a larger size photo.

After our visit at the Abbey, we boarded our tour buses and head to Chinatown's Jade Dynasty Restaurant for dinner.

At this point we would like to thank both William Ma and Jim Yee, for making another successful day trip for the Yee and Mah clans, we also like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Shui Chi Yu, for their help in registrating all the Yees' day trip guests. And finally, we like to thank Dana Mah, Winnie Kwan and Rosa Yee for their memorable photo shots.

Do you have any favorite destination suggestions for our next day trip? Please let us now by contacting either Mr. Shui Chi Yu, William Ma or Jim Yee. Thanks!
