Congrats to the 2013-2016 Canada YFT BoardYee Fung Toy Society of Canada newly elected Officers for the 2013-2016 term are as follows:
Canada YFT YFT 2013 Spring Get Together Dinner
The Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada and the Yee
Fung Toy Society of Vancouver co-hosted a
get-together Dinner for the officers and spouses
before the arrival of the traditional Chinese
Spring Festival.
This year the get-together dinner was held at
the King's Chinese Cuisine Restaurant on Main
Street, on Tuesday, January 15.
The food served by the King's Chinese Cuisine
Restaurant was excellent, and their price are
reasonable too. That's why we kept coming back
for more each year.
This year we have 4 members from the YFT youth
group and scholarship students joining us.
Jaime Yee, Vanessa Yu, Kimberly Yee and Amanda
Yee, welcome and thanks for joining us! Martin Yee A Visit to the Yee Society
For the past little while, the Yee Society has
been a place I¡¦ve frequented quite often. Unlike
many of the long-standing members I¡¦ve met and
encountered who engage in focused rounds of
Mah-jong, read the daily newspaper, or share an
interest in classical Chinese singing, I am one
of the Society¡¦s newest members.
Years ago, my grandparents were active and very
loyal members of the Society but as I was
growing up, all I knew of was that they were
part of an organization they felt a strong
attachment to. It wasn¡¦t until a year ago that I
developed an interest in learning more about the
Society and coincidentally, it became the topic
of my thesis research for school. I would have
never known that I would become a member one day
but with an interest in architecture and
multigenerational issues, it seemed that through
the years, I was pleasantly led to revisiting
something that my grandparents valued so highly.
This past weekend, Jim, Wayne, and Chairman Kan
were kind enough to allow me to come in to
photograph the Society members while they
stacked and clattered Mah-jong pieces together
and learned to sing old Chinese melodies. While
the members were informed that I was stopping
by, I have to admit that as I stepped through
the front door, I wasn¡¦t sure how I would be
received especially with a camera slung around
my neck. My concerns were clearly unfounded as,
I, instead, was warmly greeted by the members
who then quickly returned to their game of
Mah-jong or sat and chatted with me before going
back to their sheet music.
I furtively moved around the Society hall,
quietly observing how the members occupied their
time, using my camera to capture those moments.
Every now and then, someone would look into the
camera and we¡¦d exchange smiles and despite the
language barrier, some level of understanding
was being communicated. As with the Mah-jong
players, it was quite endearing to see how
committed some of the women in the singing group
were to learning music and engaging in that
experience with close friends. I think for the
Society members, there¡¦s a comfort in knowing
there¡¦s a group of people who you can socialize
with regularly and who share in similar
interests, particularly for the more senior
members. Watching them enjoy themselves among
the company of long-time friends gave me an idea
of how my grandparents must have felt when they
were once members of Society. Jaime Yee, 23/01/13 Chinatown's 2013 Spring Festival Celebration Gala Dinner

The Vancouver Chinatown Revitalization
Committee met on March 9, 2013, a sunny
Saturday morning at the scenic Langara Golf
Course Clubhouse to share ideas and implement
priorities for the 2013 Vision Planning
Workshop. Members of the Yee Fung Toy Society
of Vancouver Youth Committee (Jaime Yee,
Vanessa Yu, and Andrew Wong), were happily
invited by Henry Tom, Chair of VCRC, to
participate in discussing a wide range of
issues and opportunities facing Chinatown.
Other supporting members including Esther Yue
(alternate director for YFT of Canada), Judy
Lam Maxwell (VCRC board member, historian, and
educator), and Edmund Ma (Mah's Athletic
Association of Vancouver Martial Arts
Instructor) also attended.
The workshop was facilitated by Doug Soo,
former Dean of Continuing Studies at Langara
College, who led an engaging dialogue composed
of many business and community leaders and
representatives. Doug started by explaining
the process of the workshop. He asked
participants to identify the key issues and
challenges confronting Chinatown, and the role
that VCRC may have in addressing them. The 24
participants pointed out factors such as
establishing a set of common values,
directions for working together, succession
plan and board structure, and a roadmap on
specific future projects over the next 5
years. Henry also highlighted some of the
noteworthy achievements of VCRC and explained
lessons learned from past experiences. Doug
then asked the members to split into groups of
6 and instructed them to rank the roles and
functions of VCRC by order of relevance and
importance. After a round of discussion,
Andrew gave a brief presentation, explaining
the rationale behind the points of view of
their group.
After a brief working lunch where participants
were asked to brainstorm ideas on what a
revitalized Chinatown might look like, Edmund
presented a list of elements that would
contribute to a brighter and livelier
Chinatown. Other members mentioned safer,
cleaner, and busier streets, a family-oriented
neighborhood with greater integration with
surrounding communities, improved nightlife
such as an expanded night market, and public
amenities such as a Chinatown community
centre, town square, Asian heritage museum,
and green space. Other ideas included
introducing a farmers' market, food carts,
buskers, block parties, and
youth/multigenerational activities. Social
projects such as city incentives for Chinese
organization to develop housing for low-income
senior and new immigrants, restored and
rehabilitated heritage buildings, and
increased residential density to support new
and traditional businesses, and attract local
independent business owners who embrace being
in Chinatown (especially a diversity of
quality restaurants) were also highlighted.
The workshop distilled all the ideas and
comments offered throughout the day and agreed
to promote greater involvement by a broader
community, continue and strengthen VCRC's role
as a catalyst in the community and in
relationship to City Hall, and focus on
outreach and advocacy opportunities to strive
for a revitalized Chinatown. Lastly, the
members proposed the following Vision
Statement to guide VCRC actions and promote
for formal recognition at every opportunity: "VCRC¡K a collaborative voice
for Chinatown Revitalization" The executive members of YFT of
Vancouver Youth Committee would like to thank
Jim Yee, Chairman of YFT of Vancouver, and
Henry Tom for referring and inviting them to
attend this workshop, injecting new blood to
the VCRC visioning process. It was a highly
informative and productive event, which
benefited the youth committee greatly in terms
of improving their roles and operations in the
greater community.

Tribute to Fred Mah Dinner
The Mah Benevolent Society of Vancouver and
the Mah Society of Canada hosted a Tribute
Dinner to Fred Mah on Friday, April 5th at the
Pink Pearl Restaurant.
Fred Mah was bestowed the Vancouver Civic
Merit Award by Mayor Gregor Robertson on
February 26, 2013.
In a ceremony at city hall, Mayor Gregor
Robertson said council unanimously voted in
favor of giving Mah the award for his "many
contributions" to arts, culture, and community
in Vancouver. "
Fred has given very generously of his time as
a volunteer to numerous groups and causes for
many, many years," said Robertson as he
presented the award. "He has great
achievements to speak of, achievements that
tell the story of a person who is totally
committed to his city, his community and to
the environment, a person who¡¦s committed to
ensuring that our city is stronger, healthier
and more vibrant, and an inclusive place for
many generations to come."
Mayor Robertson said Fred's achievements have
included conservation of heritage buildings in
Chinatown, his work that led to the
designation of the neighborhood as a national
historic site, and his efforts to establish
business, cultural, and educational
relationships with Guangzhou, Vancouver¡¦s
sister city in China. He has also helped to
organize the Chinese New Year and Mid-Autumn
Festival parades, and to start groups
including the Chinese Cultural Centre, the
Vancouver International Dragon Boat Festival
Society, and Friends of False Creek.
Congratulations cousin Fred!
Congrats to William Ma for getting the QE II
Diamond Jubilee award presented by Deputy
Mayor, Tony Tang!
Since it was initiated by City Council, we
could say it was an indirect kind of civic
award, or at least recognition by the City for
his contributions. He deserves it as much as
Fred deserves his Civic Merit award. Photos courtesy of the City of Vancouver and James Yu. Jim

Ching Ming in Vancouver
Nineteen members of the YFT Society of
Vancouver arrived at the Chinese Pavillion at
the Mountainview Cemetery on April 6 around 11
am to attend the annual Ching Ming memorial
service. The Day was cloudy with sunny
intervals.
Our memorial service officially began as Vice
Chair Stephen Yee and his volunteers made
preparations: candles and incense sticks were
lit, fruits, roast pig, chicken, sponge cakes,
etc, and liquor were laid down on the
ceremonial altar..
After the ceremony, we all headed back to the
Society Hall for our annual General members
meeting, followed by a delicious lunch.

Vancouver YFT Youth Members Historical Chinatown Tour
The Yee Fung Toy Society of Vancouver Youth
Committee met on Saturday, May 11 at the
invitation of Judy Lam Maxwell, to take part
in one of her very popular Historical
Chinatown Tours. She is a historian who
specializes in the history of Chinatowns and
Chinese Transnational Migration.
The tour started off at the mouth of the
Millennium Gate, the official entrance to the
national historic site of Vancouver Chinatown.
Just a few steps away, the Shanghai Alley
signifies the epicentre of Chinatown in its
earliest incarnation, leading to once bustling
courtyards of century-old heritage buildings .
A replica of the West Han Dynasty Bell, given
to Vancouver from the city of Guangzhou, China
commemorates the birthplace of this historic
community. Other points of interest included
the Sam Kee Building, Chinese Freemason
Building, Yue Shan Society of Vancouver, Wing
Sang Building, and the Chin Wing Chun Society
of Vancouver.
Taken the fact of recent developments, Judy
also introduced many local businesses that may
seem unconventional to Chinatown's traditional
character, but all striving to revitalize
Chinatown by trying to meet the demands of
present demographics. Stores like cafes and
pubs, restaurants, art galleries, bike and
longboard shops, and a German sausage store
are among the many additions to this
continuously evolving and diverse community.
It was an enlightening experience to learn
about Chinatown's segregated past from the
rest of the city, its dynamic and cutting-edge
present, and what might be in store for its
future.

History of Brotherhoods, Clans And Secret Societies of Vancouver's Chinatown
A documentary by Kevin KY Li, written by
Cindy Leong.
Spanning more than 100 years, Brotherhood,
Clans & Secret Societies in Vancouver's
Chinatown tells the story of the struggles
of Chinese immigrants in British Columbia
and the pivotal role family, clan and mutual
aid associations played in helping newcomers
build a life in Canada.
Sometimes secretive, these societies were
vital to the social and economic fabric of
Vancouver's Chinatown. They kept migrants in
touch with their families in China, and
helped shape Chinese Canadian history. As
influential as they were in the past, these
societies are now facing new challenges with
the changing patterns of migration, and must
search for new ways to attract younger
members. PRC 64th Anniversary Celebration Gala

Vancouver YFT Youth Meeting with Other Chinatown Association Youth Groups
Members of the Yee Fung Toy Society of
Vancouver Youth Committee (Vanessa Yu &
Andrew Wong) met on Sunday, October 6 at the
ever-bustling New Town Bakery &
Restaurant through the invitation of June
& Doris Chow (newly-elected board
directors of the Hoy Ping Benevolent
Association of Canada (HPBA)) to discuss on
fresh ideas of attracting and retaining
youth involvement in various Chinatown
societies/associations.
Other supporting members including Jim Yee
(Chairman of YFT of Vancouver), Esther Yue
(alternate director for YFT of Canada), and
Judy Lam Maxwell (VCRC board member,
historian, and educator) also attended.
The group also met with representatives from
the Mah Society of Canada and the Lee's
Benevolent Association of Canada. After a
brief roundtable introduction, the group
shared similar challenges of recruiting
youth participation and the pressing demands
of succession in their respective
associations.
Many members echoed that traditional youth
programs (i.e. athletic clubs and/or Chinese
language classes) are no longer the most
effective means of attracting youth
involvement because of the changing dynamics
of the demographic puzzle.
However,with new programs respecting the
unique qualities/values of Chinatown
associations, it is possible to leverage on
established programs (i.e. scholarships and
martial arts clubs) and build upon them.
Other topics such as reforming
academic-based scholarships with the
additional requirement of community
involvement through their associations and
the possible alignment with other
organizations. (i.e. Vancouver Chinatown
Revitalization Committee's dormant youth
committee (ChinatownNext)) were also
mentioned.
The group agreed to attend future meetings
and welcomed more associations to join in
the forum as it is in their vision to form a
Chinatown-wide youth committee for
cross-organizational collaboration in the
near future.

Learning the Ropes of Western Lake Beef Soup and Yeung Chow Fried Rice
On Sunday, November 17, the
Hoy Ping Benevolent Association (HPBA)
in Chinatown generously hosted a pilot
cooking class for those interested in
learning how to prepare a few traditional
Chinese dishes. Doris and June Chow of the
HPBA, organized the class around the theme
of eggs. On the menu: egg-drop soup with
ground beef and cilantro as well as egg
fried rice with BBQ pork.
HPBA President Tony Chow warmly welcomed all
participants.
I, along with several from YFT (Vanessa Yu,
Andrew Wong, and George Yee), rolled up our
sleeves and joined in on the cooking. A
handful from the HPBA, sisters Cally and
Lisa Tam, sister and brother Lisa and Joey
Fong, and Pamela Ching, jumped in as well
with Doris and June¡¦s mom, Susan, leading
the class. Jim Yee and his wife Betty;
Leander Szeto, President of the
Vancouver Fong Leun Tong Society, Sit,
Seto Clans Association; and other
society onlookers, enthusiastically watched
as we chopped, stirred, and attempted to
master our wok skills. Many of us had not
met one another previously and so it was a
great opportunity to get to know others who
were fellow foodies.
We started with the egg drop soup with
ground beef and cilantro. For such a
surprisingly simple recipe, the soup was
delicious and perfect for a crisp fall day.
Perfectly thickened stock (thanks to the
secret ingredient of water chestnut starch);
pillowy strands of egg; seasoned beef; fresh
cilantro; and a sprinkling of white pepper
made for a great starter, leaving us excited
for what was to come next.
We all joined forces to prepare the
ingredients for the fried rice which
followed with Andrew demonstrating his way
of cooking the dish. Carried through the
kitchen were the smells of soy sauce,
onions, and BBQ pork. With several batches
of fried rice made, each of us had a chance
to try our hand at the wok and many hungry
mouths were fed.
From the success of this pilot class, we
hope to develop an ongoing cooking program
open to benevolent association members of
all ages. Following the session, we had
already discussed possible venues to hold
the next class as well as thought about
other dishes we could prepare.
We left with meeting new people; having our
stomachs filled; enthusiasm for recipes to
try; and new-found knowledge that Vanessa
and I need to salt our food and that a
charred flavour is better suited for BBQ and
not fried rice!

YFT Christmas Lunch 2013
On Sunday, December 8th, a packed house of
80 filled the Yee Fung Toy Society of Canada
for the annual Christmas lunch. This year
was particularly special as we were
fortunate to share the company of members
from various other benevolent associations:
sisters Helen and Lily Lee as well as Peter
Lee (Lee¡¦s Benevolent Association of
Canada); Dana Mah (Mah Benevolent
Association); Judy Lam Maxwell (Lim Sai Hor
Benevolent Association); and sisters Doris
and June Chow (Hoy Ping Benevolent
Association of Canada).
YFT Society of Vancouver Chairman Jim Yee
generously gave me the opportunity to
display and speak briefly about my thesis
project concerning a design proposal for a
re-imagined version of our building, the Yee
Fung Toy Society of Canada. Being able to
present my ideas not only at the society,
but in front of the society¡¦s
intergenerational audience and other
benevolent associations, really echoed many
of the ideals and concepts explored in my
research surrounding multigenerational
support networks. The synergy between fellow
associations present during the lunch,
amplified this to an even greater extent.
Following the presentation, the singing
group gladly shared the spotlight with the
younger guests and handed off the
microphones to us for some Christmas
caroling, upon which the guests dove in for
the Christmas feast.
The large turn-out and being in the company
of newer members as well as our guests from
the Lee, Mah, Lim, and Hoy Ping associations
made the event that much more memorable. Merry
Christmas and see you all in the new year! Photo
